Contraceptive perceptions and method choice among young single women in the United States.

Abstract:

:Data from a national survey of young unmarried women are used to analyze the relationship of perceptions of method characteristics to the acceptability of methods for use and to the actual contraceptive choice. Ordinary least squares (OLS) and logistic regression analyses are employed to assess the effects of perceptions on method acceptability and on actual use. Methods that were seen as having more highly positive attributes were also seen as more acceptable, and were used by a greater proportion of the women in the sample, even though the overwhelming popularity of the pill overshadowed all other methods. It was concluded that perceptual factors can help predict who will use a particular method and that this can be potentially useful to family planning service providers in influencing method choice. :This study analyzes the relationship of perceptions of method characteristics to the acceptability of methods for use and to the actual contraceptive choice, using data from the 1983 National Survey of unmarried Women, a multi-stage stratified, and clustered area probability sample, comprising personal interviews of never-married 20-29 year-old women in the spring and summer of 1983. Women were 1st tested on contraceptive knowledge, then asked to rate methods on a 3-point scale (lower scores indicating a better rating). Also current sexual activity was examined. Ordinary least squres and logistic regression analyses were employed to assess the effects of perceptions on method acceptability and actual use. The pill was almost universally known: 99% of women were aware of it; figures for some other methods were condom, 95%; IUD, 91%, diaphragm, 90%. There were some racial differences and notably low %s for natural family planning methods. Methods seen as having more positive attributes were seen as more acceptable, for example, spermicides, rated 1.92 for safety, 2.38 for effectiveness, 2.17 for interference, 2.32 for convenience, and 1.48 for cost, with a weighted mean of 2.07, and were rated 2.27 for overall acceptability, while the diaphragm (mean=1.83) was rated 1.88 for acceptability. Despite a perception that the pill and IUD were least safe, the pill was rated 1.46, the best figure for overall acceptability due to other factors. Other perceptual factors examined for their effect on use and choice include race (Black, White), use status, and sexual activity. It was concluded that perceptual factors can help predict who will use a particular method and that this can be potentially useful to family planning service providers in influencing method choice.
