East Asia review, 1976-7: Singapore.

Abstract:

:Singapore reached its replacement fertility with a net reproduction rate of 1.0 in 1975, and will have accomplished zero population growth around 2030 with a population of 3.5 million from the current 2.3 million. The birth rate should stabilize at 50,000 after 1990 and age-specific fertility rates are expected to decline at all ages in 1977. Family planning programs will continue to stress delayed marriage and childbearing as well as family life education on responsible love, marriage, and parenting to counteract rising abortion rates among unmarried teenagers. Condom use presntly exceeds oral contraceptive usage; female sterilization rose slightly to 10,310 in 1976 but fell to 8236 in 1977; and male sterilizations remained low at 351. The government continues to spend S$2.04 million/year (U.S. $.91 million) on the family planning education and programs.
