Should we do another test? Decision making in blood banking.

Abstract:

:A decision model was developed to evaluate the costs and benefits of further reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted disease. The model addresses recipient risk factors as well as operational considerations. Application of the model to prior risk reduction decisions documents its validity as a decision-making tool. Adoption of such a standardized decision-making approach would ensure recipient safety while controlling the costs of providing blood for transfusion.
