Gregory Goodwin Pincus (1903-1967).

Abstract:

:This is an obituary for Gregory Goodwin Pincus whose death in August, 1967, terminated a distinguished career in the biological sciences. His major work was in reproductive biology. This work, in collaboration with Dr. John Rock, led to the development and field testing in Puerto Rico of the 1st OC (oral contraceptive). This work grew out of consultations with Margaret Sanger, a pioneer in the field of world population studies. Dr. Pincus started with the knowledge that ovulation in mammals can be prevented by administration of progesterone. His research was directed at compounds which effectively inhibit secretion of pituitary gonadotropic hormones, especially those which are orally active. Dr. Pincus believed in the internationalism of Science. In addition to his research in reproduction, he is known for his establishment of the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology as a place to train young scientists from developing countries so that they might return home and work to improve the level of daily life. His publications and honors are summarized.
