Abortion seeking behavior among low income women: comparisons of public surveys and group behavior.

Abstract:

:This paper compares the demographic characteristics of abortion seekers with the characteristics of the base population from which they were drawn. Medical charts of nearly 4000 low income abortion patients were used to compare with a base population represented by the Houston Metropolitan Area Project which studied the attitudes of persons towards abortion. Generally, it is hypothesized that women who seek abortions are not representative of the wider population of which they are a subgroup. Representativeness of 5 demographic variables: age, education, religion, ethnicity, and marital status are examined. It was found that minority groups, the young, the moderately educated, the unmarried, and members of more conservative religions were over represented in the abortion seeking sample. Abortion seeking behavior is frequently no representative of the patient's acceptance of abortion as the most morally desirable outcome.
