Abstract:
:A survey was taken of the rubella-immunity status of women attending Liverpool, England's largest family planning clinic, in order to determine the need to intensify the program of vaccination against rubella in pregnancy. All women who attended the clinic in January 1980 were asked whether they had either had rubella or had been screened elsewhere. The 604 women who responded negatively were offered a screening; 120 were excluded from the analysis for various reasons. Age, marital status, and social class were recorded for each participant. 96% of the women were shown to be immune to rubella, with only 90% for the 25-29 year age group and over 98% for all other age groups. Neither marital status nor social class showed any significant effect. Single women aged 25-29 years in social classes I, II and III (combined) showed the lowest immunity rate at 84%. The higher immunity level among younger women is an indication of the success of the school girl immunisation program of recent years.
