Abstract:
:In a collaborative study, conducted by American and Indonesian researchers, on the attitudes of married, middle class Indonesian women toward themselves and toward their families, special efforts were made to carefully recruit, intensively train, and selectively match interviewers to respondents on a number of characteristics. Since the data for the study was obtained via lengthy, open-ended interviewing techniques, matching the interviewers to the respondents helped to insure that the respondents would be able to talk freely and easily to the interviewers about their feelings. The recruited interviewers were married women with children of their own who had the same religious and ethnic background as their matched respondents. In order to meet the matching requirements it was necessary to hire primarily inexperienced women. These women were intensively trained for 4 months. During the training sessions they were encouraged to play an active role in helping to develop the questionnaire and to phrase the questions. Their input was invaluable as they frequently corrected some of the biases and false assumptions held by the outside researchers. This procedure also helped the interviewers understand the reason for ascertaining specific types of information and the need to ask the questions in a specific manner. The interviewers were drilled in note taking and taught how to probe for information without influencing the respondent's reply. The success of this project demonstrated the usefulness of matching respondents and interviewers and the value of adopting a collaborative research methodology.
