Abstract:
:The 1988 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) collected data from 4107 households and conducted complete interviews with 4201 women ages 15-49 years. The 27 tables and charts in this article summarize findings of the DHS in the areas of fertility, family size preferences, contraceptive use, postpartum variables, infant mortality, and child health and nutrition. The DHS indicated a total fertility rate for the 1985-88 period of 5.3, with significant differentials in terms of residence (6.1 in rural areas compared to 3.9 in urban areas) and educational status (6.7 for women with no education compared to 3.7 among those with high levels). Overall, 32.7% of respondents indicated a desire to cease childbearing, but this statistic increased progressively with number of living children. Current contraceptive use was 43.1% (36.1% for modern methods). The most popular method is the pill, used by 31% of currently married women. Among exposed nonusers, the most commonly cited reasons were infrequent sex (19%), lack of access to a source of contraceptive supply (18%), inconvenience (13%), and husband's disapproval (9%). Mean age at first marriage among respondents was 18.5 years, but women with the highest educational status married at a median age of 20.3 years. Breastfeeding is widespread, and 57% of respondents reported continuing this practice when their child was 12-23 months of age. The infant mortality rate in 1983-88 was 52.7; again, there were significant differentials by residence and educational level.
