The effect of vasectomy on the production of plasma luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone in man.

Abstract：

:A prospective study of plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in 51 men before vasectomy and 10 days and 3 months after vasectomy revealed a trend to rise in LH 10 days after vasectomy normalizing after 3 months. The literature concerning alterations in LH and FSH after vasectomy is reviewed and different theories are discussed. :Physicians followed 51 men aged 29-50 years who and a transscrotal bilateral vasectomy at Hobro Hospital in Hobro, Denmark from January 1983-January 1984. Specifically, they took plasma samples on the day of the vasectomy, 10 days later, and 3 months following the vasectomy in only 46 cases. They conducted this study to examine the effect a vasectomy has on luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. Laboratory personnel conducted immunoassays of the plasma using the Amerlex LH RIA and Amerlex FSH RIA kits. They 1st used the 1 way analysis of variance test which indicated no significant differences between preoperative and postoperative levels of LH or FSH. Similarly, the paired t-test did not show any significant changes. Yet plasma LH levels 10 days after the vasectomy did rise almost significantly on the 95% level. There was no significant change between preoperative and postoperative LH levels after 3 months, however. These results did not match those of the largest retrospective and prospective studies previously conducted. Their results indicated a significant increase in postvasectomy LH levels (15% increase in retrospective study; LH levels higher after 6 months and 2 years). The retrospective study examined men who had had a vasectomy anywhere from 1-25 years earlier. The prospective study followed the men for 2 years. These inconsistent results and those of other similar studies indicate a need for further studies. Some researchers have speculated that LH levels rise to regulate testosterone so it stays within normal ranges. Perhaps these rises in LH prevent normal fertility after men undergo successful rejoining of the cut ends of the vas deferens.
