Abstract:
:In this anecdotal account of experiences as a nurse at a community health care clinic in inner-city Washington DC, the author stresses the lack of usefulness of pro-life/pro-choice positions in the context of concrete experience. The women served by the clinic tend to view pregnancy, wanted or unwanted, as something beyond their control. In some cases, pregnancy is desired as a means of cementing a relationship or enhancing self-esteem; in others, a pregnancy represents an unbearable threat to well being and survival. In all cases, the position of the health care provider on abortion is largely irrelevant. Rather than adopt a pro-life or a pro-choice stance, clinicians must be prepared to be pro-client and assist women to devise a plan that suits their life circumstances.
