Abstract：
:Basic methods of contraception of unwanted pregnancy are reviewed: mechanical, vaginal devices, hormonal tablets, and IUDs. On the basis of personal experience the author considers that, compared with other methods of contraception, the intrauterine spiral is the safest device for the female organism. An evaluation of the American Lippes Loop is given. This is compared with a 4-year observation of the use of the 1st Polish IUD, the "Spiral W," which was devised by Reszczynski and Krzaklewski of the Wroclaw Medical Center and produced by the Securitas plant. The Spiral W was found to cause a very low rate of complications, while achieving a high level of effectiveness. It is considered to be quite successful in completing with foreign designs of devices.
