Toward self-integration: the recovery process of chemically dependent nurses.

Abstract:

:This qualitative field research explored and described the process of recovery for chemically dependent nurses. Data collection methods included participant observation in a chemically dependent nurses' self-help group for one year and in-depth interviews with 20 chemically dependent nurses who were in the process of recovery. Data analysis was done according to the grounded theory methods. In accordance with this method, a substantive theory was proposed that viewed the recovery process as a move from self-annihilation to self-integration. Stages and phases of self-integration are presented.
