Abstract：
:This letter was written in response to the article by P.G. Brooks et al ( 113: 104, 1972) in which the use of the peritoneoscope for removal of extruded intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) with fluoroscopy to aid localization was recommended. In recent experiences of the authors of this letter and of R.R. MacDonald, colpotomy was performed and the IUCD was removed digitally, without difficulty, through a small incision in the posterior fornix. These patients were discharged home within 48 hours after a completely pain-free and uncomplicated postoperative course. It was suggested that colpotomy is a smaller procedure and the anesthetic required is less hazardous than that required for peritoneoscopy. Also the justification of the radiation dosage incurred by continuous use of intraoperative fluoroscopy throughout the procedure was questioned.
