Who uses Norplant. A study from Finland.

Abstract:

OBJECTIVE:Although Norplant implantable contraceptives were introduced first in Finland, their use has been infrequent. The objective of this study was to investigate what kind of women use Norplant in Finland, who suggested its use, and from what source women get their information on Norplant. METHODS:A questionnaire was mailed to all women having had Norplant inserted one to two years before the study initiation (June 1992) in seven family-planning clinics in the Helsinki city area (n = 262). After one reminder, the response rate was 82%. RESULTS:Most of the users were 25-34 years old, and many of them had had a previous abortion. Half of the women were still considering a (subsequent) child. All the women had used some birth control method before Norplant and reported several problems with it. Women reported that they themselves had chosen Norplant, but physicians and nursing staff in the family-planning clinic were their most important information sources. Most women considered that they had received sufficient information before insertion regarding both the good and bad aspects of the method. CONCLUSIONS:Women with previous abortions are a special users' group for Norplant, even though most users are in no way exceptional women. :The objective was to investigate what kind of women use Norplant in Finland, who suggested its use, and from what source women get their information on Norplant. A questionnaire was mailed to all women who had had Norplant inserted 1-2 years before June 1992 in 7 family-planning clinics in the Helsinki metropolitan area (n= 262). The response rate was 82%. The mean age for Norplant users was 31 years, and about half were 25-34 years old. In comparison with urban 18-to-44 year old women in Uusimaa county (n= 432) the Norplant users were younger, less often married or living with partner, and less likely to have higher education or work outside home than users of other methods. The mean age for first delivery was 24 years. 39% of the women had had at least one induced abortion (mean 0.8). 31% of insertions were done simultaneously with an abortion in the family-planning clinic connected with a maternity hospital. Half of the women were still contemplating having a child. All the women had used some birth control method before Norplant and reported several problems with it. Women reported that they themselves had chosen Norplant, but physicians and nursing staff in the family-planning clinic were their most important information sources. 61% of the women had 5-year effective Norplant, and 23% had 3-year-effective Norplant-2, but 13% (n= 27) of the women did not state whether they used Norplant or Norplant-2, and 3% (n=6) did not know which one they were using. The users of Norplant-2 were younger. First-time users of Norplant constituted 65%, 34% using their second set of Norplant, while one woman used Norplant for the third time. Of the users of five-year Norplant capsules, 48% had them for the second time.
