Abstract:
:Five hundred dental panoramic tomograms of patients over the age of 17 years were examined and any radiographic relationship of the mandibular second molar to the inferior dental canal noted. The position of the inferior dental canal within the mandible was also noted and compared with previous studies. In the population examined, 2% of mandibular second molars were radiographically related to the inferior dental canal and this was 2.5 times more common in women. The importance of the close proximity of the inferior dental nerve to the apex when root filling or extracting this tooth is considered.
