A highly specialized and motivated volunteer population: platelet donors.

Abstract:

:The plateletpheresis program of the M.D. Anderson Hospital was established in 1963. Approximately 20,000 units of platelet concentrates are produced per year. Credit for the nonreplacement fee generates the greatest number of donors. No organized recruitment campaign exists. Each donor becomes a recruiter for the program. Also involved in donor recruitment are all laboratory personnel, as well as Donor Room exployees.
