Abstract:
:Several changes to society in the last four decades have had implications for people and their families living with Parkinson's disease (PD): (1) The change in the role of voluntary organisations highlighting the importance of listening to the needs of the patients and their families. (2) Demographic changes resulting in the increase in the number of elderly frail people living with brain disease. (3) The change in family structure. (4) The increasing importance to focus more sharply on the ageing population affected by neurological disorders so that their needs can be met appropriately. In order for the providers of service to deliver appropriate and cost effective care it is important that they listen to the voices of the voluntary organisations and recognise the necessity for changing attitudes. It is imperative that service delivery is appropriate to meet the needs, as we can no longer afford the wastage of time and resources. To effect change, strategic alliances become increasingly important.
