Systems biology asserts that crucial insights will emerge from the study of organisms as hierarchical systems or networks in which individual biological components interact in many and complex ways. This is now seen as an invaluable conceptual framework for the advancement of biological understanding and, in particular, for the development of more effective approaches to the treatment of disease. WIREs Systems Biology and Medicine has a strong interdisciplinary focus and serves as an encyclopedic reference for systems biology research.
